Upsell vs cross-sell: what is the difference?
An upsell is a step up, and a cross-sell is a matching extra.
The short answer
An upsell offers a bigger or better version of what the buyer picked, like a large drink instead of a small one. A cross-sell offers a different item that goes with it, like fries with a burger. Both give the buyer a chance to get more from one order.
What is cross selling?
Cross selling means offering a buyer something else that goes with what they are buying. The extra is a new item, not a bigger version of the first one.
Some people say cross sale. It means the same thing. A few cross-sell examples:
- A phone case offered with a new phone.
- Batteries offered with a toy.
- For digital products (made-up examples): a set of matching stickers with a digital planner, or a font with a pack of Canva templates.
What is the difference between an upsell and a cross-sell?
An upsell changes what the buyer gets, and a cross-sell adds something next to it.
- Upsell: a step up. The same kind of thing, but bigger, better or more of it. Example: 40 presets instead of 10.
- Cross-sell: a side item. Something new that goes with the first thing. Example: a phone wallpaper set with a planner.
A quick test: ask, "Is this more of the same, or a new thing that goes with it?" More of the same is an upsell. A new thing is a cross-sell. Learn more in what is an upsell.
How do upsells and cross-sells work on Stakk?
On Stakk, an order bump is a kind of cross-sell at checkout, and the one-click upsell is the upsell.
- Order bump: a small extra the buyer ticks before paying. It rides the same charge, so it carries one fee.
- Upsell: an offer shown after the buyer pays. One click adds it, no card to type again. It is its own charge with its own fee.
You choose what goes in each one. The steps are in how to add an order bump and how to add an upsell. The full guide is how order bumps and one-click upsells work.
Stakk does not issue refunds for you. If a buyer wants their money back for an extra, you refund it yourself. See how to refund a buyer.
How do you pick a good upsell or cross-sell?
Pick an offer that makes the first purchase more useful. Here is a made-up example for a $15 digital planner:
- Cross-sell as an order bump: a $4 set of matching stickers, ticked at checkout.
- Upsell after payment: a $29 full-year bundle with every color theme.
Keep the bump small next to the main price, so it is an easy yes. Make the upsell a clear step up. Say what the buyer gets in a few plain words. One good offer at each step is better than a long list.
Questions people ask
Is it cross sale or cross-sell?
Cross-sell is the usual word. People also say cross sale, and they mean the same thing: offering an extra item that goes with a purchase.
Can one offer be both an upsell and a cross-sell?
Sometimes. A bundle that holds a bigger version plus new extras is a bit of both. What matters most is that it helps the buyer.
Is an order bump an upsell or a cross-sell?
Most often it is a cross-sell: a small extra item added at checkout. Some people use a bump for a small upgrade too, which is closer to an upsell.
